Peter, Paul, And Mary’s Peter Yarrow Dies At 86—Fans Send Beautiful Tributes

It’s been 65 years since Peter, Paul, and Mary sang about Puff The Magic Dragon in the iconic song of the same name. Peter Yarrow passed away on January 7 at the age of 86, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Peter’s daughter, Bethany Yarrow, created a living tribute to her father in the weeks leading up to his death. She shared a message that her father’s “dragon days are numbered.” She then asked fans to send in their tributes, and they delivered.

“We’ve asked friends and extended family to contribute a written story, video or audio message about how Peter’s humanity, music, unwavering social activism and generous heart had touched their lives in ways big and small. There is Peter Yarrow the folk activist legend, and then there is the man, a deeply compassionate man, who changed the lives of so many people in very personal ways,” she wrote.

Many Shared Kind Words About Peter Yarrow Before His Death

One wrote, “Peter, your spirit will always live in me as an inspiration for creativity, music, caring, and the joy/hard work of social justice action. I feel graced to have you as my second cousin! Thank you thank you for all you have given to your blood family, your extended family of friends, and for all the love you have spread in our World.”

Another fan shared, “Brother Peter, I love you. You have brought peace, healing, understanding and respect into this world. And you have allowed me to share in that journey. I will be forever grateful to have you in my life. Your voice will live inside my soul and inspire me forever.”

“Dear Peter, You have been a shining presence in our lives from one generation to the next. We have been truly blessed with your presence and will keep you in our hearts forever. You are truly magical. We love you for eternity,” a message reads.

Bethany posted a final message about Peter Yarrow days before his death. She shared, “So grateful for all the love and support of extended family, dearest friends, and everyone who has been writing living tributes, sending prayers, and singing the songs that bind us together with peace as the song in our hearts. Peter is very weak physically, but his spirit is strong and his light is growing brighter every day. We won’t let the light go out! We love you Peter.”
