Orchestra Members Visit Hospital To Play Live Music For Ailing Patients

Four musicians in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra sit as they play their instruments in a hospital

When you think of an orchestra, you likely imagine them playing in grand concert halls. But the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra (KSO) says they actually spend about 70% of their time in their local community, including schools and hospitals. In fact, this popular group has their own Music & Wellness program. This program aims to provide live music for the purpose of helping people heal.

Participating KSO members go through training in order to best use their musical talents in this unique way. They even have a board-certified Music Therapist as part of their program. All of this time and effort pays off when they play for those in the hospital. See for yourself in the heartwarming video below.

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Uses Their Musical Talent to Make the Lives of Hospital Residents Better

Christibeth’s reaction to the KSO is exactly why they’ve been showing up for their community in this way for more than 20 years. Music has the power to heal, and it’s something these musicians have the privilege of witnessing firsthand.

“Music is so impactful to everyone in so many different ways, particularly to those in hospital settings,” director of communications for KSO, Trianne Newbrey, says. “It’s just a good reprieve from everything else that’s going on in here and just a good breath to take and you can hear from the beautiful music that you’re hearing today that there’s a lot of just more relaxed shoulders, a lot of friendlier smiles.”

Plus, patients aren’t the only ones who benefit from these performances. The melodies they play also provide comfort and joy for healthcare workers and the musicians themselves.

“To see patrons’ faces light up in hospitals or in libraries, you see smiles crack on people,” Trianne adds. “You get to engage with more people.”
