It all started when Chad Felice, Homer Parks Maintenance Coordinator, was made aware of the situation by a regular to the refuge. According to this visitor, a mother moose (who was accompanied by a calf) threatened to charge at him. Because of this, the visitor thought another calf must have been nearby. Sadly, this second baby moose was trapped under a boardwalk.

To ensure a swift and safe rescue, Chad made phone calls, gathering a team to save this moose calf. Ultimately, the rescue mission involved someone in a wetsuit crawling under the boardwalk. Meanwhile, another person kept watch of mama moose. She was getting antsy, threatening to charge a few times.
“Once we got [the moose calf] up from underneath the boardwalk and got it over the other little gap, obviously it was making some noise,” Chad recalls, “but then once it kind of saw mom, it just kind of trotted over to mom, and mom gave it a lick and little grunt.”

Finding a way to lift this large moose calf wasn’t easy, especially with their protective mom around. But, in the end, everyone involved in the rescue mission was more than happy to lend a hand. Plus, now they can look forward to spotting this sweet moose family around the park in the future.
“I’m sure I’ll see him on my rounds,” Chad says. “Just kind of the day in the life of Homer Public Works.”
