Norwegian Family Discovers Viking-Era Relics Right In Their Backyard!

When this Norwegian family lost an earring in the grass, they pulled out all of the stops to find their missing piece.

However, what they found while looking was a lot more valuable!

The Aasvik family lives on the island of Jomfruland, located off the southern coast of Norway. Jomfruland has a rich history, with known settlements dating back to the Middle Ages. But this family’s find gives even more insight!

When the earring was lost, the Aasvik family grabbed a metal detector and began hovering over the yard. When it started beeping and dinging, the family began to dig! What they found wasn’t an earring, but instead, multiple historic relics that date back to the early days of the Middle Ages!

Viking-era buckles

The family dug up a few different pieces of what has now been identified as Viking-era belts buckles and valuables. These date back to as early as 780!

The history community of Norway has come out of the woodwork in support and excitement of the find.

“We congratulate the family who found the first secure Viking Age find on Jomfruland!” posted the Cultural Heritage of Vestfold and Telemark County Council.

While the family never found their missing earring, they uncovered an incredible bit of history. It’s likely that the relics were buried as part of a burial ceremony for a woman in Jomfruland. How incredible!
