View of the northern lights above a line of trees, which appear like dark shadows. The sky is full of greens and purples.

There is nothing quite like viewing the northern lights in person. While much of the country got this opportunity earlier this year, most of the time, that view is reserved for those of us who live far in the north. That said, forecasts are predicting a shift tomorrow night. If that does happen, it seems that more of us will get the opportunity to view those colorful lights in the sky!

According to Todd, those of us in northern states, like New York, Minnesota, and Washington, are expected to be the lucky ones. Visibility will vary by state and even city. This increased chance at viewing the northern lights is incredible, so if you are someone who lives in an area that might get a good view, here’s what you need to know.

Last-Minute Shift in Northern Lights Will Send Spectacular Views Farther South Than Normal

Your best chance at spotting these lights will take place tomorrow night (September 10). For optimal viewing, it’s vital to be in an area with as few lights as possible. Other tips include:

  • Heading toward the magnetic poles
  • Looking up between 10 PM and 2 AM local time
  • Checking out this aurora forecast to see if your area is in the coverage area

If you do choose to head outside for a viewing of the northern lights, make sure to stay aware of your surroundings. This is especially true if you’re venturing into dark, isolated areas. And, of course, have fun!
