When Joann Fabrics announced its bankruptcy and subsequent closing, crafters nationwide were heartbroken. Joann was many people’s go-to shop for material, notions, and sewing machines. When Joann closed after more than eight decades, it left some customers feeling a bit lost. They feared they would no longer have access to some of their favorite brands, including private-label products. On June 5, The Michaels Companies, Inc. announced the acquisition of Joann’s intellectual property and private label brands. Joann’s website now redirects to Michaels’ with a welcome and a simple message, “Everyone is welcome at our craft table.”

Michaels Will Make Big Changes To Attract Former Joann Customers
Many Joann customers feel like they’ve lost a family member and Michaels hopes to carve out a special place in the market for them.
“Michaels is expanding its fabric, sewing, and yarn assortment, adding over 600 products across new and existing brands, including sewing and quilting supplies, fabric, yarn, specialty threads, sewing machines, and more,” the company said in a release. “The acquisition and expanded product assortment reflect progress as Michaels continues to reimagine the customer experience to become the go-to destination for fueling creativity and celebration.”
David Boone, Michaels’s Chief Executive Officer, expressed excitement about the future and what the company can do for Joann customers.
“We’re honored to have the opportunity to welcome JOANN customers into our creative community and are committed to delivering the selection, value, and inspiration they are looking for at Michaels,” he said. “This acquisition allows us to better serve both new and existing customers, respond to rising demand across categories, and build on our momentum as the destination for creating and celebrating in North America.”
The news excited many customers.
“Michaels bought Joanns. And they have SUCH cute cheap fabric and I’m salivating over their website selection,” a fan shared on X. “Oh no, my wallet!!”
