61 Marines Line Up — Execute Flawless Drill Routine That’s 100% Improvised.

If you’re the kind of person who likes things nice and tidy, there’s probably nothing in this world that appeals to your sense of order more than a military drill team.

Marine recruits spend weeks during boot camp memorizing their drill instructor’s calls, learning formations and how to move as a single unit. It’s a discipline that will serve them well as they move forward with the next phase of their training.

The marines in this particular video are about to graduate, but before they can continue on with their training, they have to perform a trick drill known as the “monkey drill.” Filmed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, the video is an impressive feat when you learn just what goes into the drill’s execution.

The “monkey drill” is a true test of everything recruits learn during boot camp because it’s entirely improvised. That’s right, this wasn’t practiced at all.

But memory is still key: Each member of the platoon marches single file until the drill instructor issues a random call. Only then do they execute the move as a single unit… like the sudden pivot above.

The soldiers are so focused that they remain in formation, completely undistracted, even as a large group of soldiers flood out of the nearby barracks.

The video’s been viewed hundreds of thousands of times since it was uploaded and judging by the comments, it’s brought back fond memories for many who served in the armed forces.
