Major Fred Grooms Jr. works hard to make sure he never misses any of his son’s important events, but once he was deployed to Kuwait, he missed a whole year’s worth of football games… except for one.

Scheduled to come home in November, Fred got permission to leave early so he could make it to his son’s last regular football game of the season. The best part? His son, Fred Grooms III, had absolutely no idea!
Just before the game at Helena High School in Alabama began, both teams met at the 50 yard line. The head referee instructed the players to take a good look at all of the referees gathered around them so they could “recognize and memorize their face.” Young Fred was totally confused by these out-of-the-blue instructions, but he followed along nonetheless – only to discover that his dad was disguised as one of the referees!
Watch Major Fred’s clever reveal in the video below, and don’t forget to share this heartwarming homecoming.
