Police Body Cam Footage Captured The Heartwarming Encounter

In a news conference, Assistant Chief Emily McKinley said that Ali came across the unidentified man in distress on the Lincoln Memorial Bridge on October 9. He didn’t hesitate to help.

Police Body cam footage shows the man, who reportedly wore a firefighter’s shirt, hopping over the railing of the bridge. Ali approached, and the man began to talk to him.

“That is material s— and that can all be replaced,” Ali told the man. “She can be replaced. Your personal stuff can be replaced. We can’t replace you.”

A second officer eventually arrived, and the pair lifted the man over the railing and back to safety. Ali told WDRB he was happy the man was safe.

“It’s a huge relief,” he said. “I helped somebody out. I don’t know. It’s real emotional just talking about it now, you can probably tell in my voice. I just didn’t want nobody to jump.”

Ali, a former firefighter, joined the police force in 2021 after working for the city’s fire department for more than 20 years.

After sharing the police body cam footage, Chief McKinley said she believed Ali was on that bridge for a reason that day.

“We cannot be more proud of Officer Ali. He’s serving our community well.”

The chief added, “This is why we took this job,” she said. “We took this job because we want to help people.”
