Not all heroes wear capes – some wear helmets and shoulder pads!
It was a regular weekday morning in Rome, Georgia, and Treyvon Adams was driving four of his friends to school. All five of the teenagers, whose ages range from 14 to 17, are members of the high school football team, but on this morning they were called upon to do a lot more than score touchdowns.
Math teacher Luis Goya was standing outside Rome City High School welcoming students inside when he heard a loud bang. He rushed to the closest intersection and saw that a small silver car had swerved to avoid being hit by a car driven by a 16-year-old, crashing her car into a white SUV. The teacher quickly dialed 911 when he realized people inside the cars were injured.
“There was smoke coming up from the hood,” he recalled. “There was fluid on the ground. I told the dispatcher, ‘We need to hurry!'”
Treyvon and his friends had seen the entire crash play out. He knew instantly that they had to help the 50-year-old woman inside the small car.
“It was right in front of me,” he described. “I turned off the car and jumped out and said, ‘Hey look, let’s go help her.’ The woman was leaning over into the passenger seat begging for help. She had blood on her face and was screaming.”
Together with teammates Tyson Brown, Antwion Carey, Alto Moore, Cesar Parker, and Messiah Daniels, Treyvon rushed to the car and tried to open the passenger side door. When it wouldn’t budge, they went to the driver’s side and began physically pulling the doors from its hinges.
“The vehicle was smoking, the fluids were leaking and I could tell it was about to catch fire had the police not got there quickly, which they did,” said Treyvon.
Luis was watching the scene play out. He was incredibly impressed with the quick response from the high school athletes, noting that they did not hesitate to rush towards a potentially dangerous situation to help a stranger.
“They literally started using their strength to pry the door open, so the lady could be released,” he recalled.
The teens finally pried the door open and helped the woman to safety. One young man even went back into the smoking car to retrieve the woman’s purse and iPad. Next, they ran to the other car involved to see if they could help the passengers inside. By that time, first responders were on the scene.
The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries. She is expected to make a full recovery, and now everyone in town is praising these young men for their heroism!
