For many folks, a job is simply a job. But that was not the case for Peter Dodge. This award-winning scientist held a deep love for his work as a meteorologist. This was easily seen in the way he talked about what he did. While he loved many aspects of his work, one of his favorite parts had him flying directly into hurricanes. Yes, directly into them.

In case you aren’t aware, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have Hurricane Chasers. These experts take aircrafts into hurricanes to obtain all sorts of info that helps us better understand, and prepare for, even the worst storms before they make landfall. While this type of work is certainly not for the faint of heart, it’s what Peter loved to do. It’s fitting, then, that his ashes were dropped in the eye of a hurricane just last week.
Beloved Hurricane Chaser’s Ashes Are Scattered Into the Eye of Hurricane Milton, Fulfilling One of His Last Requests
Peter, who developed a degenerative eye disorder, was forced to stop joining these hurricane flights sooner than he wanted. So, by tossing his ashes into the eye of Hurricane Milton, they were able to fulfill the meteorologist’s wish to join a flight one more time. This moment meant the world to his former crew, family, and friends.
“That was the part of his job that he loved the most, that he talked about the most,” Peter’s sister, Shelley Dodge, shares. “That’s what was so beautiful about what they did for Peter yesterday, is they made sure he was dropped through the eye.”
Thanks to Peter, we know so much more about hurricanes. In other words, his contributions will continue to have a lasting impact for countless years to come. Thank you, Peter, and rest in peace!
