Mom Pens Heartfelt Letter On Facebook About “Kids These Days.”

christine letter kids these days

“Kids these days.” This phrase incites numerous thoughts from older generations about everyone from tiny members of Gen Alpha all the way up to Millennials. Often, it’s used to describe the ways in which young people fail to measure up in their eyes.

But one mother by the name of Christine Organ has a bone to pick with those who talk down about “kids these days.” If you ask her, today’s children are doing great. The proud mama of a few little ones herself, she sees firsthand just how compassionate, hardworking, and diligent children can be.

She recently shared her thoughts about children today in a post on Facebook and it’s a refreshing perspective we can all learn from.

Facebook

We hear a lot about ‘kids these days’ lately. About all the cyberbullying and the extensive video gaming. About how they’ve become too ‘soft’ in the age of participation award parenting or too ‘hard’ in this age of social media. About how they don’t respect elders or appreciate rules and discipline.

Well, as a parent of a couple of ‘kids these days,’ let me tell you what I see…

Facebook

I see kids who spend time playing Fortnite and NBA2K with their friends, but then also have these really big and deep conversations with their friends about god and religion and what might happen when we die.

I see boys who curl up in bed with their little brother when they have a nightmare, and little brothers who say ‘climb in.’

Facebook

I see girls who aren’t afraid to say ‘no’ and ‘why not me?’ and ‘we’ll run the world one day’ (because, really, haven’t we been running the world since the beginning of time anyway).

I see boys cry. A lot. And I see boys comfort other boys when they cry, never once telling them to ‘suck it up.’

I see kids who, when faced with a problem at school, try to solve it themselves and then, when all else fails, seek help with trusted adults. And get the help they need.

Facebook

I see kids go out of their way to invite other kids to play with them at recess.

I see fifth graders who let kindergarteners win at a playground game of basketball.

I see first graders put their arms around fourth graders.

Sure, there are days when I want to throw the Xbox out the window, and the thought of my kids running amok on social media sends shivers down my spine. I need to remind my kids on a daily (hourly?) basis what it means to move about as a kind and respectful human in this world.

Facebook

And since I’m raising sons, the constant (yes, constant) effort to battle the climate of toxic masculinity is never-ending and I often wonder if I’m doing enough.

Sure, there is bullying, disrespect, bad choices and misbehavior. There always has been. These are kids and they are human, after all.

But if that is what you notice about ‘kids these days,’ then quite frankly, you just aren’t paying attention.

It’s safe to say that Christine is onto something here. Kids are our future and they’re often wiser and more compassionate than we give them credit for.

Here’s to you, Christine, for seeing all of the promise that young people hold. The kids are going to be just fine.
