Katelin Buchanan and Erica Huston-Elem have been friends since before they were born.
You read that right, according to Katelin, the first picture of them together is of their moms’ bellies touching. one of their two pregnant moms’ bellies touching. Their relationship has been special ever since, spanning decades of highs and lows. That’s why it only made sense that when one of the women realized she couldn’t have children, the other stepped in.

Katelin and her husband desperately wanted to be parents, but after a series of tragic miscarriages, they realized that she just couldn’t carry a baby to term. That’s when her best friend Erica made the ultimate offer.
Erica, a mother of two children herself, suggested that she be the couple’s surrogate.
Wanting to surprise her and thank her for the incredible gift she was giving her, Katelin wrote into “The Ellen Show” about Erica.

Ellen was understandably touched by the story and decided to surprise the pair of lifelong BFFs!
Jeanie traveled to Arlington, Virginia, to interview the two women… but they had no idea that they were going to actually be on the show – live!

Ellen joked that she didn’t want to push Erica into premature labor with the surprise, but the two women were definitely shocked and moved to tears hearing from their favorite talk show host. As it turns out, Ellen was a big part of their routine… especially when it came to coping with heartbreaking news about another miscarriage.
Erica said, “The moment I had an opportunity to do something [for Katelin], I just jumped at it.”
And now Ellen’s surprise got to be part of their happy memories. Not content with just saying, “hello,” though, Ellen had a few more tricks up her sleeves…

She announced that after the pregnancy, both Katelin and Erica would be flown out and get to attend the show as VIPs, and Katelin, as a first-time mom, would be getting all the gifts the mothers would receive on the Mother’s Day episode.
