Learning a new language is a great way to expose yourself to different perspectives and meet people from around the world. Though it’s often overlooked, sign language is becoming a more common choice for students like Juliet Lyan of Orlando, Florida.
She took three years of ASL in high school, so she understands quite a bit and is always eager to put her skill to use. One day while she was working as a waitress in 2017, she got the perfect opportunity to practice when a stranger was seated in her section. At first, she tried speaking to him in English before trying Spanish and finally switching to ASL. As soon as she did, the man’s face lit up with pure joy!
“I love sign language more now because I can meet those who don’t feel like they belong and tell them the hearing world loves them,” Juliet said later.
