Scottish Brother-Sister Duo Defies Gravity In Breathtaking Figure Skate Routine.

Millions enjoyed watching the ice skating routines during the Winter Olympics, although for all but the most diehard fans, the Olympics and events leading up to them are the only time figure skating really makes it onto their radars.

But just because the Olympics are over, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy re-watching those routines and others like them, cheering on these athletes who devote years of sweat and tears to perfecting their craft.

Like John and Sinead Kerr, a Scottish brother-and-sister figure skating pair that competed in two Olympics, seven World Championships, and eight European Championships. They won two Scottish and seven British titles before they retired in 2011.

“In the last year we have changed peoples’ perceptions,” Sinead said in 2009, referring to the couple’s bronze medal at the European championships earlier that year.

Before we’d been thought of as audience favorites but maybe not so good technically. But last year we made big progress in the technical part of our skating — we really improved, which is a difficult thing at our age. Now we’re not just the entertaining couple, people see we can skate really good, too.

You can get a taste of this incredibly talented pair’s showmanship in the clip below, taken in 2008 when the pair competed at the World Figure Skating Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.

It’s breathtaking to watch, the way they move with such synchronized grace throughout their routine. It’s like they brokered a time-out deal with gravity, just for this dance.

Interestingly, both started out as singles skaters and didn’t actually pair up until 2000. But that year, they won the silver medal at their first British Nationals.
