Internet Stumped By Strange Black Smoke Ring In The Sky

A Kansas man spotted something strange in the sky and shared his bewilderment on Facebook. Frankie Roman Camren posted a video on May 3 of a black smoke ring in the sky. It looked like a giant version of what the caterpillar puffed in Alice in Wonderland. He spotted the ring in a rural area in Bonner Springs, hoping someone could help identify the strange black smoke ring.

Of course, people came in hot with jokes.

A friend wrote, “I’m pretty sure that’s the wicked witch of the West doing a donut.”

“It’s the devil blowing smoke rings from hell,” another friend shared.

This person seemed to have a pretty good explanation. “Frankie, you are a hoot! Stay happy, and let us know if you see these again. It’s a firework. Calm down, everyone. If you look up on the 4th of July, chances are you’ve seen them before. They are super loud and leave the ring behind.”

A friend shared Frankie’s black smoke ring video with local television station KAKE, and it now has more than 1.2 million views. He spoke with AccuWeather via video message about his discovery.

“Let me start off by saying, it’s been a little crazy,” Frankie said in a video message to AccuWeather on Facebook. “It’s a smoke ring. I don’t know what caused it. I’ve heard all sorts of stuff, from portals to aliens invading.”

AccuWeather explained that this type of smoke ring is typically manmade and likely from a type of pyrotechnic.

People in the KAKE comment section agreed.

“Blown transformer.. It’s called a smoke vortex ring,” a viewer wrote.

This person agreed but was still a bit stunned to see where the video originated from. “Smoke ring. See them all the time in North Dakota from the oil flares. But no clue what it would be in Kansas lol.”

“I’m ashamed of how long I stared in the middle of the ring thinking y’all drew a circle around something and I just couldn’t see it,” someone joked.
