If we’re shopping in the snack aisle, some brands just stand out. They’ve made their mark on the American household, and we can spot them a mile away. The bright yellow Lay’s potato chips bag is iconic. Herman W. Lay invented Lay’s potato chips in 1932, and we’ve been snacking on their salty goodness ever since. Lay’s prides itself on quality ingredients and commits itself fully to creating the best product possible for customers. The company has big changes in store and shared the news in a recent release. The company explained that only 10 varieties of the more than 4,000 registered potatoes make the cut to become Lay’s potato chips.

“Lay’s spends up to nine years creating the best potato for farmers to grow that can deliver the perfect crisp, flavor and golden glow when sliced and cooked,” the release explains. “The potatoes’ journey from the soil to the shelf is the heart of Lay’s. But here’s the surprising part — 42% of people who enjoy Lay’s don’t realize they’re made with real, farm-grown potatoes.”
Lay’s Potato Chips Will Rebrand In A Huge Way
For the first time in nearly 100 years, Lay’s potato chips bags will have a brand-new look. The bags will showcase “real potatoes, real people and real joy,” and the brand will eliminate artificial flavors and colors in the United States.
“The new visual identity celebrates the humble, farm-grown potato — where every Lay’s potato chip starts — and heroes the ingredients that deliver the unmatched flavor consumers have always loved,” Alexis Porter, PepsiCo’s Vice President of Marketing, Global Lay’s, shared.
Lay’s will continue to use familiar aspects of its logo, like “Lay’s Rays” and the red ribbon on its potato chips’ bags. They will also add “enhanced photography” to showcase the Lay’s difference.
“This redesign, the brand’s biggest in nearly a century, is a love letter to our origins,” Carl Gerhards, PepsiCo’s Senior Director of Design, Global Lay’s said. “With the new Lay’s visual identity, our team created a flexible design system that celebrates the brand’s famous flavors in countries around the world.”
