When stories of nearly deadly house fires make the news, it’s common to hear how someone went above and beyond to narrowly save their pets. Donald Hale’s house fire experience is similar, but the role his bearded dragon plays makes it rather unique. Recently, the Washington state resident went for an impressive 13-mile run. Once he got back home he was, understandably, ready to rest. So, he took some melatonin to fall asleep.

This is when the house fire started. Two smoke alarms rang out, warning everyone inside to evacuate. But Donald was still asleep and totally unaware of any nearby dangers. Luckily, that was not the case for his lizard, Spike. When his owner wouldn’t get up, this clever pet found a way to help. Donald shares what happened in the video below.
@cbschicago If you have a lizard for a pet, don't doubt that it loves you! Donald Hale says he had just come back from a 13-mile run last weekend when he took some melatonin and fell into a deep sleep. Because of this, he did not hear the two smoke alarms going off, but his pet, Spike, did. And that bearded lizard, he said, saved his life.

“Didn’t no neighbor come and wake me up. Didn’t no alarm wake me up,” Donald says. “My dragon woke me up. Spike!”
When a Fire Breaks Out in This Washington Man’s Bathroom, His Bearded Dragon Saves Both of Their Lives
When Donald finally woke up, he was welcomed by smoke and fire coming from his bathroom cabinet. Luckily, he was able to put the fire out by pouring water on it. Later, he would learn the fire was caused by something that someone had poured down the drain.

Needless to say, Donald could not be more grateful to have Spike. I’m sure the two of them are going to have a blast on that trip to the Grand Canyon!
“When he said he was gonna take him to the Grand Canyon I lost it because that’s so sweet,” someone writes in reply to Donald’s story, another person adding, “Bearded dragons have such a BIG personality. They are like little dogs in a lizard body.”
