Henry Winkler and Ron Howard won our hearts as Arthur Fonzarelli and Richie Cunningham on Happy Days. The pair starred together for 11 seasons from 1974 to 1984. They made many wonderful memories together over a decade of working on the show. After the show wrapped, Henry Winkler decided to take a souvenir from the Happy Days set. He opened up about his favorite memento on an episode of his daughter’s podcast, What in the Winkler?, alongside Ron and his daughter. Bryce Dallas Howard.

“When Ron and I did Happy Days, there was a shelf outside of Arnold’s,” he explained. “And we put our coffee cups or our water bottles on it as we went through the swinging doors before we made our entrance.”
Henry Winkler said, “At the end of Happy Days, I took that shelf.”
“Happy Days” Costar Ron Howard Loved Henry Winklers’ Idea
He said on the podcast that taking the shelf was “so smart.”
Henry explained that he wrote things on the shelf throughout his time on Happy Days, including when Ron was expecting Bryce and he and his wife were pregnant with Zoe.
Then, Henry shared a sweet memory of Ron. “I was 27 when I met Ron, who was 18, and Ron had a wisdom about him that I talk about all the time—this depth of understanding.”
Out of frustration, Henry Winkler said he hit the Happy Days script because he wasn’t landing a joke the way he wanted to.
“Ron put his arm around me, walked me to the back of the soundstage, and said, ‘You know, the writers are working as hard as they can. Let’s not hit the script.’ I said, ‘Ron, I will never hit the script as long as I live,'” Henry said.
