Over a dozen seniors are currently signed up for this rewarding class. The instructor, Whitney Kiesling, says that opportunities like this are the perfect way to get their seniors moving. While this is important for folks of all ages, that’s especially true as we get older.
“There’s so much research out there showing how good dance combined with music is for everyone, including seniors,” Whitney told KMBC.
Ballet may seem like an odd choice for seniors, but Town Village doesn’t just offer this style because it’s so loved – this style of dance is said to be perfect for older folks because it works numerous muscles in a natural way.
Luckily, Whitney’s students absolutely adore the process. One resident, Mary Anne, recently had the opportunity to attend one the ballet classes the day after she hit a milestone birthday. Considering the dance program helps her re-live childhood memories, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
“I find myself getting lost in the music,” Mary Anne shared.
Not everyone gets why ballet is such a great dance style, but Whitney has a way to make sure that more people give it a chance.
“I think people, you know, they are surprised to hear ballet class,” Whitney said. “So, we tend to describe it as an artistic exercise, music and movement class as well. It kind of helps people see beyond that term of just ballet.”
Whatever it’s called, one thing is for sure: these lively seniors can’t get enough! Now, when is the last time you considered taking a dance break?
