Grandmother Takes First Flight at 88 with Grandson Piloting Plane

Grandmother's First Flight

Frances Dahlke has lived a great life. At nearly 90 years old, she’s checked plenty of things off her bucket list. But one item had a bit of a stipulation. Before Frances got onto a plane, her grandson, Alex Shupe, had to get his pilot’s license. Well, the dream recently came true for both. Frances, a Wisconsin native, took her very first airplane ride, and Alex took her there in style. It was a moment they’ll never forget.

Alex Made Sure His Grandmother’s First Flight Was One for the Memory Books

Alex told CBS Chicago he wanted his grandmother’s first flight to be special.

“As an airline employee, you do get these flight benefits. I was able to throw her name on a list and then put her on the stand-by list,” he said.

On February 9, Frances arrived at La Crosse Regional Airport to board the plane for her first flight to Chicago. The grandmother looked forward to being in the sky.

“The sensation, you know, and of course watching the clouds out if there are any out there,” she said.

She added that her family made sure she had everything she needed, just in case.

“They made sure they told me to take Dramamine first. I’ve never taken Dramamine in my life either,” Frances joked.

Of course, to make his grandmother’s first flight memorable, Alex pulled out all the stops.

“It’s very, very nice. I felt like a spoiled celebrity. I had the first seat in uh, first class,” Frances said.

For Alex and the rest of her family, Frances is a celebrity. We’re so glad that she had such an amazing first flight. We’re sure it’s a day no one on that plane will ever forget.
