You can take the pediatrician out of the office, but you’ll never get them to stop “working.” When this 96-year-old great-grandfather welcomed his newest great-granddaughter, he automatically shifted into doctor mode.

He might be moving slower, but the steadiness of his hands is still intact. With his stethoscope, he checked his great-granddaughter’s heartbeat and breathing. Noting that her heartbeat was real good, he adjusted to continue admiring the little bundle in his lap.
While the baby rested peacefully, Pape continued his “examination.” He remarked that she is a pretty baby. As he said this, the baby’s expression changed to a bright smile. Continuing, he admired the perfect shape of her head and how perfect her little ears are.
As his hands move around the baby gently, one commenter noted that he was doing a subtle fontanelle check. This is an examination of a baby’s soft spots. The fontanelles can be a key indicator of a health issue before any other symptom is evident.
Caring for babies can be overwhelming, and this is something a pediatrician understands better than most people. That this great-grandpa is sitting calmly holding his great-granddaughter offers her mom a short break. He does not appear to be in any hurry to relinquish his little “patient.”
We mentioned earlier that this was his “newest” great-granddaughter. His daughter-in-law, the baby’s grandma, says he has five grandchildren and five great-grandkids. When this baby’s 11-year-old brother made his entrance, great-grandpa was there to perform his life’s duty. It is heartwarming that this family has such a solid rock in their foundation.
After completing his “examination,” the doctor made a knowledgeable diagnosis. His great-granddaughter is 100 percent perfect. There is no second opinion desired or necessary.
