The Oscar-winning actor and his classical pianist partner were spotted leaving a dinner date in New Mexico recently. Several photos showed the two smiling and laughing as they strolled around Sante Fe, where they’ve lived for their entire marriage.
Gene has always lived a private life, despite being an a-lister. And the two have rarely been seen in public together. In fact, the last time photographers caught them side by side was during the 2003 Golden Globes.
According to a 2020 interview with Empire, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa have a standing Friday night date and have for most of their relationship. However, they opt to stay in and bond over movies at home.
“We like simple stories that some of the little low-budget films manage to produce,” Gene told the publication.
The two also made a tradition out of having “a Comedy Channel marathon, with particular attention paid to Eddie Izzard.”
And they have more time to focus on their marriage now that Gene officially retired from Hollywood. The now-94-year-old stepped away from his career in 2004 after a stress test showed that his heart was weakening. However, he has been healthy well into his golden years.
“His health is good,” a source told Closer. “He still bicycles, does yard work and he’s a great handyman. After all the drama of Gene’s career, he loves the peaceful life he shares with the lovely Betsy.”
