Anyone who has spent time in a cold climate knows the danger of frozen lakes and ponds. Even if the ice looks thick, it’s easy to fall through, and the temperature of the water can be deadly.
Still, when this man saw a dog struggling in an icy lake, he didn’t hesitate to help.

The man and his wife are from Russia and were driving on a cold day when they spotted the dog. As soon as they realized what had happened, they pulled over and the husband jumped in to the freezing water after him.
In a video of the harrowing rescue, the man uses his fists and elbows to break ice as he swims towards the struggling pup, clearing a path and finally grabbing him.

Without wasting any time, the man turns around and quickly swims back to shore with the dog in his arms.

But the story doesn’t end there.
Both the man and the pup fully recovered from their icy adventure. The kind rescuer fed the dog and ultimately decided to keep him as his own pet– and name him Rex.

The amazing rescue video has been shared across the internet and pet-lovers everywhere are applauding the man for his bravery (and apparent lack-of-fear for freezing water). Many people are calling the man a “hero”, “legend”, and a “very good human.”
