For The First Time In 47 Yrs, This Animal Shelter Is Completely Empty!

Animal shelter workers smile as their kennels are finally empty.

This Christmas, not a creature was stirring at one empty Pennsylvania animal shelter — that’s because they’ve all gone to loving homes! On December 22, the Adams County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) posted heartwarming news on Facebook. The organization was thrilled to report that, for the first time in almost 50 years, their kennels were just about empty! According to Today, 94 animals have been adopted since the beginning of November. An additional 26 lost pets were picked up by their owners.

“Two weeks ago our kennels were almost filled, now we don’t have any dogs in the building at all (we have 1 cat that came in as a stray a little bit ago)!!” the Adams County SPCA shared in their Facebook post. “Our community stepped up once again! This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA is empty let alone at Christmas time, it is a true miracle!”

The post continued, “The staff and volunteers have worked VERY hard to take care of the animals in our care and to make sure they got adopted to the right home! This year we have adopted out 598 animals and reunited 125 strays with their owners! WOW! It has been a busy year! We thank everyone for their continued support and look forward to new adventures in 2024!”

These adopted animal shelter pets are very happy in their new homes!

Since getting all their pets settled into permanent homes, the empty animal shelter has kept up with former residents online. In an adorable series of Facebook posts they’re calling “Happy Tails,” the Adams County SPCA is sharing stories from the families who have taken in their cats and dogs. These posts include some of the most adorable photos!

Buttons, for example, was featured on the shelter’s Facebook page. This dog’s new owners were so excited to welcome him into their home! They celebrated his arrived with an adorable picture of him and his sister in their holiday sweaters. The Adams County SPCA shared the story of his happily ever after on social media.

It’s so hearwarming to see these pets finally get the loving families they deserve. Being in a caring environment makes a world of difference for an animal; just ask these former shelter dogs! We’re so grateful to organizations like the Adams County SPCA for helping our four-legged friends find their forever homes.
