Florida MLB Team’s Bat Dog Makes Her Debut In Hilariously Messy Fashion

Lucy May hasn’t quite gotten the hang of her new job as this Minor League Baseball team’s resident bat dog, but the crowd clearly loves her! Florida’s Clearwater Thrushers hired the pooch when her older sister, Layla, retired from the unique position after six years. Unfortunately, it seems like the 10-month-old Labrador retriever isn’t quite living up to the family name. Her owner was “mortified” by her behavior on her first day, UPI tells us!

It was during a game between the Clearwater Thrushers and the Dunedin Blue Jays that Lucy May made her first appearance as a bat dog. Things started going wrong pretty much immediately! Instead of picking up the bat like she was supposed to, this pooch bypassed the item completely and ran into the other team’s dugout. Next, she raced back out onto the field and relieved herself.

While Lucy May squatted, her bat dog duties completely forgotten, the audience erupted into applause. They didn’t care that she wasn’t doing her job; her antics were way funnier! After taking another lap around the field, the pup was given a second chance to retrieve the bat. Once again, she ran right past it! Eventually, she had to be put back on her leash and escorted off the diamond.

Fans loved Lucy May’s approach to the job.

On social media, the Clearwater Thrushers shared a hilarious video of the mischievous canine’s first day at work. Commenters thought the footage was too funny! Many came to her defense, pointing out that she was probably a little stressed out.

“Nervous energy,” wrote one user. “First day of work. A little overwhelming. Grass. A ball. Sticks everywhere.”

Another added, “She got the excited poops! Completely understandable. Try to fire her and I will file a wrongful termination lawsuit on her behalf.”

It sounds like Lucy May is in no danger of losing her job as bat dog for the Thrushers, though. In another social media post, the baseball team reassured fans that “she is 1000% KEEPING her job!”
