Not many high school relationships stand the test of time. But Kiana Myrick and Joshua Powell are still going strong.
The North Carolina couple first met in their freshman history class, where sparks flew instantly. Joshua described the moment as “a light in the room.” It wasn’t long before they both fell head over heels and bonded over their shared faith. Eight years later, Joshua feels the same. That’s why he decided to make this holiday season the most memorable of Kiana’s life.

Joshua saved the surprise for a family Christmas party. All their loved ones were there to share the beautiful moment, including his mother, LaShonda Williamson, who began recording as her son kicked off another round of their “Family Feud”-style game.
Joshua began asking Kiana a series of wedding-related questions, starting with, “Name a day a woman always dreams of?” His girlfriend answered each question quickly without suspicion… at least, until she heard the last: “How would you finish this: Will you marry me?”

Kiana paused for a moment, then turned to Joshua and answered, “Yes, I will?” with a laugh. Then, her jaw dropped as Joshua asked one final question, “Might as well make it official, right?”

The cheers and tears came as Joshua got down on one knee, holding out a ring box.
“I love you with all of my heart,” he told Kiana. “A lot of people may say we’re young. I say, ‘Life is too short.'”
As for Kiana, she said yes.

For now, Joshua and Kiana are putting their education before their wedding. Joshua is studying criminal justice at North Carolina A&T State University while Kiana attends the Duke University School of Nursing. But in 2021, after they both graduate, they’ll be tying the knot.
