Dying Fan Holds Up A Sign At A Basketball Game — Then A WNBA Star Grants Her Wish.

Ashley Ahrens hugs Kelsey Plum after her sign went viral

Thanks to the power of social media, Ashleigh Ahrens recently had one of her biggest wishes come true.

Three years ago, Ashleigh was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Unfortunately, her prognosis is not good, and she is actively trying to cross items off her bucket list. One of those items happens to be meeting Kelsey Plum, a professional basketball player for the WNBA team, the Las Vegas Aces.

When Ashleigh attended Breast Health Awareness Night at a recent Las Vegas Aces game, she decided now was the perfect time to shoot her shot! A friend suggested that she make a homemade sign, so she got a marker and some poster board and wrote, “Living w[ith] stage 4 breast cancer! Meeting Plum #10 is on my BUCKET LIST!”

Plum didn’t see the sign during the game, but a member of the Aces team did. When Plum heard about the sign, she shared a photo of Ashleigh on Twitter and asked her fans to help locate her. Meanwhile, someone on her team tracked Ashleigh down!

The next thing Ashleigh knew, her Twitter page was blowing up with notifications!

The team arranged for Ashleigh to meet Plum at their next home game the following Sunday. Not only that, but the Aces managed to cross off another item from Ashleigh’s bucket list by giving her floor seats.

Ashleigh was overwhelmed with joy when she finally got to meet her WNBA hero. Plum gave her a big hug, and the Aces gifted their fan with a new jersey (#10 of course) and a new pair of sneakers.

“It means… it means a lot….” she told local news organization KTNV. “You don’t have as many opportunities. You don’t have the same stuff as Make-A-Wish like kids do.”

Ashleigh used her newfound internet fame to encourage others not to wait to cross items off their own bucket lists. Our time is never guaranteed, and her terminal diagnosis has shown her that there’s no time like the present to follow your heart.

“I just became so much more appreciative every day,” she said. “The little things didn’t bother me anymore and you hug your loved ones tighter.”

Wise words, indeed. We’re always happy to see professional athletes making time to meet their fans, especially when their fans are living with a heavy burden like this one. Thank you, Plum, for making Ashleigh’s wish come true.
