Drew Barrymore Shares Sweet Meaning Behind a Tattoo

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore got her start in Hollywood at a very young age. She stole hearts at Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s iconic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at just 7 years old. Drew’s career took off, but her personal life had struggles, including a strained relationship with her mother. That impacted her parenting style, which she recently shared on The Drew Barrymore Show.

“I want my kids to be kids. I see how important that is now. I didn’t understand that growing up, and I want to protect them so much. Putting the time in,” Drew said. “Being willing to put the time in. I think that’s been a huge recipe for me is like keep making that daily investment in your kid.”

Drew Barrymore Shared the Significance of a Sweet Tattoo

Drew Barrymore has several tattoos, but one is particularly meaningful.

“They’re for me and my daughters,” she said of a tattoo of three sardines. She shares Olive, 13, and Frankie, 11, with her ex-husband Will Kopelman.

“I was in my therapy session, and I was like, I think one of the sardines is me as a young girl alongside my young daughters, and I need to be…holding this and holding that space, if you will, for my younger self,” Drew shared.

She added that her parenting wasn’t always what she wanted it to be. Her sardine tattoo symbolizes personal growth. She still feels pain from her own childhood, but wants to make a difference as an adult.

“I never did anything but demand, demand, demand,” Drew Barrymore said. “I think a lot of people are pre-conditioned to raise themselves and to be a little bit, if not a very mega, punitive parent as if that’s any way we’re supposed to raise ourselves in this life and in this world.”
