Dolly Parton Gave Broadway Producers Very Specific Instructions Days Before Her Death

Dolly Parton Musical

One of Dolly Parton’s last projects before her death was working on the upcoming Broadway musical based on her life. Sweet Dolly poured her heart and soul into “DOLLY: A True Original Musical,” set to premiere in early 2027. Though her life ended before her Broadway dream came true, she had all the confidence in the world in the producers and performers. Just ten days before her death, Dolly spoke with producers Adam Speers and Bartlett Sher about the show

“She was very open with us both: ‘You’ve got to keep going! This is the show that I want to be on Broadway!’”Adam told Variety.

The Dolly Parton Musical Will Honor Her Incredible Legacy

Katie Rose Clarke, Carrie St. Louis, and Norah Nunes will take on the role of Dolly Parton in “DOLLY: A True Original Musical.” They understand that they have very big shoes to fill. They got to know Dolly before her passing, and she truly endeared herself to them.

“On every break, you’d think she might go out and, I don’t know, attend to the 100 million other things that she was doing, but no: She would walk around the room and speak to every actor that was there, one-on-one,” Carrie shared.

Carrie added that Dolly Parton’s life was so much more than we know. She’s very proud to tell that story.

“What I think is really beautiful about our show is that you’re able to see the more private moments that the public maybe doesn’t know about,” she said. “Because as bigger than life as she was, she was also pretty private, and she’s sharing a lot of these special, intimate details of her life — like her relationship with her husband, Carl, that were never seen in public.”

“DOLLY: A True Original Musical” opens at the St. James Theatre in New York City on January 19, 2027. It would have been Dolly’s 81st birthday.
