Son Donates Kidney To Save “Selfless” Mom’s Life.

A good parent knows that when it comes to raising kids, no sacrifice is too great.

Maybe you gave up your career to raise the kids. Maybe you left your hometown to get the little ones into a better school district. Maybe you would even give your life for your child. Whatever the case may be, parents are no strangers to sacrifice.

The same goes for the mother of Dennis Borowski. Over his lifetime, his mom, Nisa, gave everything she had day in and day out to make sure that he never wanted for anything.

“My mom is the type of person who can always make you smile,” he explained.

She is selfless and carefree, and is guaranteed to greet you at the door with a hug (and probably a basket full of goodies). Not to mention, she really knows how to pick a good horror movie. Some of my favorite childhood memories include camping, blueberry picking, and Jason Voorhees. I look up to my mom. It is through her that I learned how to put the needs of others before my own.

But not too long ago, Nisa’s world came crashing down. She was diagnosed with Goodpasture syndrome, which is an auto-immune disease that put her in need of a kidney transplant. For Dennis, it was a no-brainer. He would donate a kidney to his mom.

He went to the doctor to find out if he was a match, and preliminary tests looked good. However, a second round of testing showed that their blood “didn’t play well together.” He couldn’t stand to see his mom suffer and he was devastated that it seemed like she’d have to go onto the donor list.

That’s when he started doing some research. Thankfully, he found a second option that looked promising: a paired kidney donation. In his words:

Basically, I would give my kidney to a stranger, and my mother would receive a kidney from a stranger. I did some research and found out that this process could actually set a chain of events into action and end up saving several lives. I, of course, jumped at the opportunity.

The process typically takes a year, but Dennis and his mom had a match within a few months. He was thrilled, but more blood tests revealed that this was also going to fall through. They had to play the waiting game once again.

Finally, in February 2018, they found their match. After a two-hour operation, his mom finally got her kidney! It was a success. A day later, it was Dennis’ turn, and his surgery was also successful. When he was finally able to see his mom as they were both recovering, he was overwhelmed with happiness. We’re happy to report that the two of them are happy and healthy!

So does Dennis see himself as a hero? It may surprise the rest of us, but no. He’s just a “simple guy” who wanted to repay his mom for the lifetime of love and happiness she’d given him.
