Allyson Eischens’s father passed away more than a decade before her wedding, and with no one else to stand in for him, she thought she’d be walking down the aisle alone on her wedding day.

Her fiancé wasn’t about to let that happen, so he secretly hatched a plan to surprise his bride with a gift she’d never forget.

As a child, Allyson’s family moved to Greenfield, Minnesota, where her father, Jerry Berdan, developed a close friendship with Chris Roose, who lived across the street. Chris became like a second dad to Allyson and her siblings, and when Jerry passed away in 2002, Chris helped fill that fatherly void.
But Chris told Allyson last year that he wouldn’t be able to attend the June 3 wedding. The costs involved were too great and Chris has a crippling fear of flying. Not only that, he had to care for his wife who had recently shattered her ankle in an accident. Allyson had planned to ask him to walk her down the aisle but decided she’d go it alone.

That’s when her fiancé, Garrett, took matters into his own hands. He sent Chris a text, telling him he was the only one his future bride wanted to walk her down the aisle.
“That’s when my wife looks at me and says, ‘Dude, you’re going.’ … It was like, ‘Nah, this isn’t happening, she isn’t walking down the aisle by herself,’”Chris said.
So Garrett had Chris flown out on the sly, not only purchasing the ticket himself but covering the other expenses. Just 48 hours before their big day, the bride-to-be got the biggest surprise of her life.

“I don’t think I could have felt more loved in that moment,”she said. “I was touched that my fiancé went out of his way to put this together and make sure Chris was there.â€

“All I can say is that I was honored and humbled to be asked to be there and I am proud to have stood in for Allyson’s father,”Chris said.
