Time waits for no man… or dog!
Jeff Nieboer of California loves to go surfing with his family. After adding Charlie, a yellow Labrador retriever puppy, to their pack, it was only natural to bring him to the beach and show him the ropes!
“It started with a camping trip to the beach,” Jeff told The Dodo. “When Charlie was a puppy I pushed him around on some really small waves.”
The adorable canine was instantly enthralled by the crashing water, and soon, the beach became his favorite place to go!
At home, Charlie is a typical lazy dog who loves napping on the couch, eating treats, and getting belly rubs. But the second he lands on the sandy shore of their favorite beach, it’s go time!
“Once he started figuring out what to do, he was way into it, right off the bat,” Jeff said.
In fact, he’s always so eager to hit the surf that he sometimes has a hard time waiting for his slow human dad. “If I have the board on the sand, I have to literally sit on it because he’ll grab it and take off,” Jeff explained.
Jeff and his wife like to say that Charlie “has the soul of a pro surfer.” His passion for the sport is certainly clear!
After some time and practice, Jeff began entering Charlie in dog surfing competitions, which typically raise money for animal shelters. The talented pup made it to the finals for the first two they ever tried! Since then, he has placed first many times and is even showing his new little brother how to ride the waves.
What a delightful beach companion! He’s even been trained to carry his own cooler, so he’s a real team player.
