Bus Driver Fire

Riding the school bus can be an incredible adventure for kids. Sometimes, life-long friendships are formed during those rides to and from school. Sure, it’s not always fun, but if you have a good driver who loves their job and is committed to keeping kids safe, things go much more smoothly. Todd Morris is one of those school bus drivers. He wasn’t even on duty on January 22 when he saw flames coming from a second-story home in Jackson Township, Ohio, but he knew he had to help. “They’re my kids,” he told Today. “I’d do anything for my kids.”

Todd knew Matt and Jordan Fisher lived in the house with their four kids, two of whom he drives to school on his bus. The fire didn’t’ scare the former police officer.

“My heart just dropped,” Todd said, adding that schools were closed that day due to cold weather. “All I could think was, ‘My kids. My kids are inside.'”

The Bus Driver Saved The Family’s Pets From The Fire

He called 911 for backup but didn’t hesitate. He kicked the door wide open to Fisher’s home.

“There was so much smoke I could barely see in front of me. It took me a second to orient myself and figure out which way I needed to go,” Todd told Today.

“I kept hearing these noises, but I couldn’t differentiate what they were or where they were coming from,” he added. “I needed to make sure that no one was inside.”

Once inside, the bus driver knew the fire was serious. The second floor was starting to cave in. Thankfully, he was able to ensure no one was inside and took the family’s dogs to safety in his car.

Matt Fisher told Today that his family was so grateful for Todd’s incredible bravery.

“Todd Morris is a hero,” Matt told Today. “He risked his life to go in there and save my family. He didn’t think twice.”

Things would have been so much worse if the bus driver hadn’t braved the fire.

“We’re devastated,” Fisher says. “But if Todd hadn’t driven by in that moment, we would have lost everything.”
