This year has proven to be quite a year for winter storms. Even Florida has experienced a historic snowfall! But humans aren’t the only ones affected by a winter wonderland. The lives of our animal friends also changes when it snows. And the adorable creatures at Buffalo Zoo in New York are no different! This place is home to a number of animals, including bison.

While some animals aren’t the biggest fans of snow, bison certainly aren’t one of them. These roughly 2,000 pound animals are, quite literally, built for this kind of weather. So, it’s no wonder the ones at the Buffalo Zoo could be found lounging around in the snow like many of us would on a warm summer day. See for yourself in the video below!

“I rarely go to the zoo when it snows,” someone shares in reply to that video. “So this is a treat.”
Unlike some animals, the bison does not move south for the winter. Instead, they simply adapt to frigid weather. There are a few ways that they do this. For starters, they aren’t picky about what kind of grass they eat, making survival easier. They also have wooly fur that protects from even the strongest of winds.

Even the bison’s metabolism has learned to adapt to cold weather. While they’re not picky eaters, that doesn’t make up for the typical lack of food they experience in the wild. So, instead, their metabolism slows down. As a result, they’re able to last on little food for much longer.
What might be the coolest of all, though, is the way they heat themselves. They’re able to generate heat simply through digestion. How cool is that!? That certainly sounds like an ability some of us humans could benefit from having!
