Fans of the Piano Man have a lot to look forward to. Billy Joel’s music transcends race, religion, age, and generation. His catalog of tunes boasts 83 singles, three of which topped the Billboard Hot 100. And, of course, dozens of top 40 hits. Whether you’re a casual fan or can sing every word to We Didn’t Start the Fire and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, there’s a little something for everyone when it comes to Billy’s music. According to Variety, John Ottman, one of the geniuses behind the 2018 Oscar-winning Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, will direct Billy & Me about the star’s early years.

It’s Not Clear How Billy Joel Feels About the Biopic Just Yet
Although Billy Joel has not commented on the biopic, if there’s a director to do the Piano Man justice, it’s John Ottman. In addition to Queen’s movie, he’s also the lead editor for Michael. The Michael Jackson biopic is receiving rave reviews, and fans can’t get enough.
Jon Small, a lifelong friend of Billy Joel’s and drummer, is excited about the biopic.
This is the most honest, heartfelt, and authentic portrayal of Billy’s early life and rise to becoming one of the greatest musical voices of our time. ‘Billy & Me’ is grounded in truth, shaped with care, and built with the insight of people who genuinely know and love Billy. As someone who was there from the very beginning, I can say this script captures not just the music, but the friendships, struggles, humor, and creative spark that defined those years,” he told Variety.
The drummer added that the biopic will stay true to Billy Joel as an artist and as a person.
“Too often, stories about artists get lost in exaggeration or mythmaking. ‘Billy & Me’ reflects the real history with integrity and respect. I first met Billy when he was 16 years old, and after reading the script, I felt the filmmakers truly understood who he was before the world knew his name.”
