Learning to swim is an important life skill that all children should have. Initial lessons can include infants as parent-child or instructor-child interactive sessions, concentrating on drowning protection. This is the type of instruction Judine Mullen arranged for her daughter, Audrey. Living in Florida, there is water everywhere, and this training saves lives. In February 2025, Aubrey passed her second baby swim test.

Aubrey began swimming lessons at seven months old. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that for most children, lessons can begin when a child is around one year old. The first baby swim test is in a swimsuit. A parent “drops” the child into the pool with the instructor. They must get their head above the water, roll onto their back, and then navigate to the side of the pool.
The second test requires the child to wear regular street clothes. Most pool accidents happen when children play too near a pool. Aubrey is now 22 months old and almost ready for the Olympics. Hopefully, she will never need to use this training. Having the training and being proficient offers peace of mind to Judine and Aubrey’s dad. Judine is pregnant with their second child, so peace of mind is an excellent trade-off.
Drowning is the top cause of death in children from age one to four. Audrey has completed four courses of ISR swimming lessons, so she won’t become a statistic. Hopefully, those skills will never be necessary.
Judine and her husband are hands-on parents. Judine stays busy as the chef and founder of Just Judine LLC. She is also a breast cancer survivor, a digital content creator, and product curator. You can follow her on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.
