Just when Alexa felt as though her life had no purpose, she discovered her calling.
It all started a couple of years after she moved to NYC. While fun at first, she hit a wall and began to struggle with her mental and physical health. Finally, she moved back home with her parents. But it wasn’t until her dad suggested volunteering at a local animal sanctuary that Alexa began to find her path.
“It wasn’t a huge place but they had some horses, some goats, some donkeys, and as soon as I got there and started volunteering I just absolutely fell in love,” Alexa shared. ” … And for the first time in my life, I felt like this is what I want to do. This is what I’m meant to be doing: working with animals.”
A couple of months passed when her mom, Sharon, brought up the idea of moving and having Alexa come along. Not only did she say yes, but she also suggested what she called a “totally crazy” idea: starting their own animal sanctuary!
It took lots of research and networking to learn how to best start a nonprofit and care for animals, but after two and a half years, this mom-and-daughter duo has rescued over 100 animals under Friendly Fields Farm in Waynesville, North Carolina! In fact, they recently announced they’re in the process of moving from their 7-acre farm to a 70-acre property!
How cool is it that Alexa and Sharon found such fulfilling work to do together? We’re certainly cheering them on as they continue to grow and help even more (and even larger) animal friends!
