“American Idol:” Athena Jett Gets an Assist From Little Sister and Earns Ticket to Hollywood

Athena Jett American Idol

Athena Jett is in Hollywood after her American Idol audition, and it’s all thanks to her brave little sister, Angelina.

During the March 17 installment, Athena went to meet the judges with Angelina in tow. The 12-year-old sister was there to support her sister and give Katy Perry a purse she crocheted for Katy’s daughter, Daisy.

Katy was immediately smitten with Angelina, and once the two shared a hug, Athena explained that Angelina was her best friend and biggest supporter.

“She’s such a bright ball of energy, and she believes in me so much,” she said.

Before Athena Jett began performing Sophia James’ Somebody New, Katy told Angelina that she could stand next to the piano so she could have a front-row spot for the audition. After Athena finished, the judges were not impressed—so Angelina jumped in and told them that her sister could sing a different song even better then asked if they’d let her prove it.

“I don’t want to be barging in or anything, but I remember for piano recital my sister sang Never Enough from The Greatest Showman. I really think that that was a really good song that she sang,” she said, shyly.

Athena Jett’s Little Sister Helped Her Get a Second “American Idol” Audition

Katy was impressed with the little girl’s gumption, so she encouraged Athena Jett to have another try, and she did.

Athena was much bolder the second time around and showcased more powerful vocals that had Katy cheering. By the end, Katy was gushing over the shockingly different audition and then looked at Angelina and said, “Good job, you’re gonna come to Hollywood, too.”

“I couldn’t do this without her,” Athena admitted.

Katy and her fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were visibly emotional by the end, and Katy noted that she was a “hard no” after the first performance, but she was fully on board after the second.

“What the hell was that?” she asked. “That was phenomenal. You have to use that. That is your sword!”

Lionel shared that he, too, changed his vote to “yes,” which left Luke. Instead of speaking to Athena, he praised Angelina for helping her big sister shine.

“That is a big, big thing you just did,” he said, “one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen a kid do.”

With that, Luke stood up and held a golden ticket in his hand. He told Angelina that she had earned the right to hand it to her sister.

American Idol airs Sundays on ABC at 8 PM ET.
