How would you feel if a stranger picked up your baby without permission? Well, this mama albatross honestly handled this situation better than you’d expect when two humans arrived to weigh her chick! Sure, she showed a little aggression, but who wouldn’t under the circumstances? This encounter was originally captured by the Live Royal Albatross Cam in New Zealand.

A clip from the live stream on social media shows the albatross and her chick relaxing by the water when a pair of humans approached them. They carefully knelt down beside the birds so as not to startle them. Although the mother briefly clapped her beak at these people, she allowed them to get pretty close. However, she wasn’t too happy when one of them picked up her baby!
Even though the man moved as slowly and as gently as possible when he reached for the albatross chick, Mom wasn’t having it. She chomped in his direction a bit more threateningly, though still not actually biting him. Thankfully, the creature didn’t interfere any further than that while the human transferred her baby to a nearby basket.
Once the albatross chick was settled, a woman used the basket to weigh the small animal. When she was finished, her colleague returned the little critter to their rightful place. Mom immediately inspected her child to make sure they hadn’t been harmed. She bit at the air warningly one last time for good measure, but the humans were already packing up their gear and getting ready to leave.
Phew, these birds must have been glad when that was over!
Despite a few minor objections from Mom, it seems like this team’s visit with the albatross chick went pretty well. According to the video’s caption, the baby bird weighed in at 1.82kg, which is around four pounds.
One commenter had the most hilarious response to the clip.
“Imagine a big bird just flies into your bedroom, slowly takes your baby from a crib and weighs it, then returns [it] as if nothing happens,” they joked.
That would be pretty terrifying!
