It’s no secret that Jelly Roll, born Jason Bradley DeFord, had a troubled youth. The artist grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and spent time in jail for numerous offenses, including robbery and drug charges. After the birth of his daughter in 2008, while incarcerated, he decided to make big changes to his life. On April 22, Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall recommended Jelly Roll for a pardon to the Tennessee Board Parole based on significant strides toward a better life.

Jelly Roll Will Wait To See If Governor Bill Lee Grants The Pardon
A pardon would make it possible for Jelly Roll to make strides in his career. Due to his criminal past, international travel and bookings proved difficult. The news of the Board’s decision thrilled him.
According to the Associated Press via People, he told the parole board, “I want to be an inspiration for people who are now where I used to be — to let them know that change is truly possible. One of the reasons I’m asking for your recommendation … is because I’m looking to take my message of redemption … [across] the rest of the world.”
Per AP, the recommendation of a pardon impacted Jelly Roll greatly, “This was incredible. I pray this goes through. But today was special for me, regardless.”
A fan commented on the Sheriff’s X post, “Redemption…that’s what it’s about! Jason has worked so hard to overcome his demons. He deserves this!”
This person agreed Jelly Roll changed his life because of his child and not fame. “Much deserved. Long before he became famous, he was changing lives & giving back. Please @govbilllee, sign the pardon.”
It’s unclear when the governor will decide about a pardon for Jelly Roll.
