“The inspiration behind the song ‘Beautifully Broken’ comes from the Japanese art form of ‘Kintsugi,’ where the artist takes broken pottery and mends it back together with gold,” Koehl told InspireMore. “This art form inspired us to write a song about how God takes our brokenness, our sin, our shame, and He brings beauty and healing to our shattered pieces.”

The song is perfectly in Koehl’s wheelhouse, as his “faith in God and His Word informs everything” he writes

“I love Jesus,” Koehl said, “and believe it’s my life’s mission to help others know and worship Him!”

George Koehl Q&A

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SONGWRITING? WHAT GOT YOU INTO MUSIC IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I’ve been songwriting since I was 14. As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in music, singing my own little tunes, and making up melodies on the piano. However, it was when I was 14 that I remember fully finishing my first song. That was also about the same time I started leading worship at my home church. Since then, I’ve seen how powerfully music can help people connect to Jesus. I have decided to dedicate my life to writing songs that honor God and help others worship Him.

WHY DID YOU ENTER INSPIREMORE’S PSALMS TO LOVE SONGS PROMOTION?

I entered because a close friend sent me the link to the promotion and encouraged me to submit my song. I didn’t know what would come of it, but I thought it might be a good opportunity to share my song with others. I’m so glad I decided to submit!

WHAT DOES WINNING THE CONTEST MEAN TO YOU?

It’s a tremendous honor! For creatives, it can be easy to get so lost in the details of our craft that we lose sight of the bigger picture and start wondering if our work is making a difference. So to hear that this song is ministering to others is so encouraging!

WHAT SONGWRITERS DO YOU COUNT AS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS? WHY?

Oh, there are just too many to list! But if I had to narrow down to my top 10 biggest songwriting inspirations, I’d have to say Phil Wickham, Brandon Lake, Brooke Ligertwood, Steven Furtick, Chris Brown, Abbie Gamboa, Mitch Wong, Cody Carnes, Benjamin William Hastings, and Tiffany Hudson.

Several of these songwriters helped write the songs that shaped me into the songwriter and worship leader I am today. All of them have mastered writing congregational worship songs for The Church, which are the types of songs I hope to write as well!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PLANS IN 2026.

I’m currently working on two independent albums with some of my best friends, which we’re aiming to release by 2027. I’m also continuing to co-write with other artists and plan to release several new singles this year!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CAREER DREAM?

My biggest goal is to write songs for the global Church. I aspire to write songs that help share the Gospel message with people from all different countries, cultures, and languages around the world. I’m currently independent, but if I were able to partner with a label one day to help spread the Gospel through music, that would be a dream come true!

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL OTHER ARTISTS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ENTERING THE CONTEST?

Go for it! If you feel God is calling you to submit your song, trust Him and see what He can do with it! You’ll never go wrong putting your faith in Him!
