Mom Captures Rooster’s Underwhelming But Adorable First Crow On Camera

Image shows a rooster's first crow.

Roosters aren’t born crowing. In fact, it is difficult to tell a rooster from a hen until the little chicks are between six and eight weeks old. Although some people get good at sexing chicks earlier, often the first indication of a rooster is their feeble attempts at learning to crow. At Pygmy Acres, they were lucky enough to catch one of their roosters attempting his first crow.

The effort of Mr. Rooster’s first crow was abysmal, but he put his heart and soul into it. “Ughughugh-uhhhhhhhh!” The muted noise came out sounding as if the bird had its head stuck in a bucket of water. He must have known it was a lackluster effort. Mr. Rooster was caught hiding to practice his cock-a-doodle-doo in a semi-private area before making another public appearance.

They say practice makes perfect, and perhaps it does. However, it seems to take a bit, as Mr. Rooster clearly loses this battle of crowing with Stew. We’re not sure how old Stew is, but he is definitely more practiced.

Mr. Rooster does improve over time. He should be waking up the neighborhood pretty well by now. And he’s got himself a girlfriend, too.

Pygmy Acres is a small hobby farm. In addition to the chickens, they have some turkeys and goats. They might be acquiring more animals as time passes, but for now, their current menagerie is adequate. The farm wife spends her time trying to perfect her sourdough recipe in between feeding all the critters.

As a boy mom, she also has her hands full (of rocks, mostly). Any boy mom will verify the validity of finding rocks hiding everywhere. You can follow Pygmy Acres on TikTok for more fun.
