“Nature Sent Me Her Rarest Beauty In Exchange For A Peanut…”

Image shows an almost white chipmunk with leucism, a rare genetic condition.

Leucism is a genetic condition that causes a partial loss of pigmentation in animals. The visual effect is splotchy white spots in fur, with typical eye coloration. Often called piebald, these animals have a mix of white and their regular fur coloring. The condition is rare, but more common than albinism, which is a complete lack of pigmentation. Julie Kobylarz considers herself lucky to have seen an almost white chipmunk.

Leucism in chipmunks is an extremely rare genetic condition! It causes a partial or total reduction of pigmentation. Thank you Doum Fontaine for allowing me to post!

Julie Kobylarz is a licensed wildlife rehabber in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Through her organization, Mouse Tales, she works on ethical rodent trapping. While most people with rodents will opt for extermination, Julie works on relocating the little rodents humanely.

We don’t know if she was on a job when she spotted the tiny, almost white chipmunk, but we’re glad she got a picture of the little cutie pie. The interaction did cost her a peanut, but it’s a price she was happy to pay.

Although she specializes in rodents, Julie also works with other animals. When a dog injured a baby bunny, she took it in. Small rabbits are notoriously tricky to keep healthy, but she managed. Her goal is to ensure baby animals are healthy enough to run from a predator. When they reach that stage, she releases them back to the wild.

Julie reminds everyone that if you see bunnies, leave them alone.

She is not always prepared to see wildlife, especially when taking out her trash.

Chances of being ambushed by a dumpster raccoon are low, but sometimes you just get lucky like that 🦝

She was able to rescue three of five baby raccoons who fell out of a 30-foot tree. Julie works with several other rescue and rehabbers in the local area. This ensures all animals receive the highest level of care available.
