Horse training is in his bones. At Duyn Equine, training is a family affair. Everyone helps train the ponies and horses, but teenage son Cody excels at the task. When you think about training, you might be picturing bridle and saddle training, as well as basic rider training. What Cody does is something a little different.

Cody does a lot of desensitization training with the animals. This helps them grow accustomed to unusual things happening around them. It keeps them calmer and makes handling them safer for everyone. Cody is like a horse whisperer, exhibiting a special talent for horse training. He can get the horses and ponies to do things most horses would balk at. The boys take Max out for boat rides.

Another part of desensitization training involves moving under and around the horse. While swimming, the boys crawl around and under the horses (carefully) as part of their training.

Cody teaches the horses tricks and general riding etiquette, in addition to desensitizing them to distractions. When a horse owner says a horse is “bombproof,” they mean that it is gentle and calm enough for any rider. Bombproof horses are sought for novice riders at commercial riding ranches. They are also a favorite as a first saddle for new equestrian riders and therapy stables.
One of the problems with many horses is a hesitation to get into trailers. Cody makes sure that his ponies will load into anything by training them to hop into the bed of a pickup truck while he rides them. They hop up with no hesitation.
