“POV: You Started Manually Expanding Photographs 10 Years Before Photoshop…”

Image shows how an artist expanded photos before photoshop.

Before Photoshop, there were Microsoft Paint, CorelDRAW, and several other rudimentary software programs. Although they permitted the manipulation of digital images, they had defined limits. While waiting for the digital age, an artist named Clare began manually expanding images.

Beginning with an original photograph, Clare mounts it on a stretched canvas. She fills in around the photo to extend the background scenery and blend it. Her additions are photo-realistic, meaning they are indistinguishable from the original image, except for the brushstrokes. Even Photoshop pros can’t reproduce these before-and-after results.

The technique, known as manually generative filling, expands the view of a standard photograph. This allows an artist to add details that wouldn’t fit within the original view. They can also alter or create new details to enhance the image. One of the recent arguments is that “AI can do it quicker.” While it might be quicker, there is still no comparison to Clare’s original works.

You can see how the addition of background details, such as the seascape or sunflower fields, makes each image one-of-a-kind. And Clare has an extra advantage over AI in that she can count the appropriate number of fingers and toes.
