Some children need naptime more than others. Walking that fine line between letting them continue having fun and forcing the nap is one thing most parents never master. So when it is past past past naptime and a parent finally puts their foot down, it often results in a meltdown. Such was the case with this young man, who opted for a temper tantrum that immediately backfired on him.

Passive resistance usually works. Lying down and becoming a deadweight is a favorite go-to for children. However, karma was on the mother’s side this day as a wave washed ashore and darn near drowned the little boy. He hastily got up with mom’s help as she tried unsuccessfully to stifle a giggle or two. Sometimes gentle parenting can use a helping hand (or a cold splash).
Laugh if you will. Parents need these karmic payback moments. Taking two young children and a husband on an ocean adventure can be exhausting. This wasn’t her son’s only meltdown during this vacation. He had a full meltdown during a boat ride, too.
Interspersed with the periodic temper tantrums were moments that didn’t backfire. Like this moment when he explains that he wants to feed sea turtles and dolphins, but not alligators. There were some frustrations when he wouldn’t stay seated while catching bait, but the interactions were adorable.
Parenting is full of ups and downs. For all of the temper tantrums and plans that seem to backfire, life with kids is still pretty good. There are moments of wonder when they see a baby deer in your driveway or get to chase dinosaurs in the yard.
Children see the world through different eyes, and we should remember that perspective.
