Annie Stegg Gerard is a different kind of artist. Her TikTok tagline says, “Creating oil paintings inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore.” She paints with a whimsical brush, and everything on the canvas lights up. Her opossum painting depicts a Momma with several baby opossums. Rather than doing ‘opossum things,’ the kids have a jar and are having fun collecting fireflies.

You might recognize some of Annie’s art. She has designed a Magic: The Gathering card, Faebloom Trick. If you play, you may have seen that card in someone’s deck. She has illustrated several fantasy books, created the artwork you see on The Sacred Wood Oracle Deck and Guide, provided images for calendars, and more.
When Annie created her opossum painting, we’re not sure if she was trying to make the little critters adorable, but that was the result. The baby opossums have the same toothy mouth as the Momma, but they are joyful. Their expressions are jubilant as they fill their jar with fireflies.
Where most people see a nuisance animal, Annie has transformed the opossum into a caring parent supervising her brood to ensure they are enjoying life. Some of her babies perch on her back, while others are cavorting in the grass, chasing fireflies. Each hair on each animal is placed precisely, painted with a practiced hand. Each detail is enhanced with shading or lighting, adding care and giving the entire painting a cohesive feel.
