On July 21, 2026, 83-year-old Gerald Guinn went hiking at Grand Canyon National Park. Around 5 p.m., his hiking partner lost track of Gerald and contacted the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center asking for help. The National Park Service shared information about Gerald, and the search began. Grand Canyon National Park did its best to share information on social media in hopes of bringing Gerald Guinn home. Many shared kind words and prayers for those searching.

“Dear Lord, please protect this man, and lead and protect those searching for him directly to him so he can be brought home to his loved ones. Please keep him safe and uninjured until he is located and returned home. Amen,” one person wrote.
Some wanted to criticize the elderly hiker, but others piped in to share their own stories. “My dad is 88 and uncle 90, they both could hike the Canyon or any mountain range. They’re in amazing shape,” a follower wrote.
Searchers Found Gerald Guinn the Following Day
Grand Canyon National Park shared the good news of Gerald Guinn’s rescue.
“At approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 22, Gerald Guinn of Kanab, Utah, was located during a helicopter reconnaissance flight approximately 2.5 miles from the point where he was last seen. Rescue personnel safely extricated Guinn via a litter carry to a nearby roadway, where he was evaluated by emergency medical personnel before being transported,” a message reads.
The news of Gerald’s rescue relieved many.
“I received an email from the park saying that he has been safely recovered by SAR personnel.
Thank you to all of the SAR teams that made this possible,” someone wrote.
The story served as a reminder to some. “Great news, stay together people.”
