Sand is always shifting, so it seems an unlikely medium for a permanent piece of artwork. However, artist James Sun has found a way to mold sand into whatever form his customers desire, and keep it that way forever.
A few years ago, James was an engineer who was bored with his work. He learned about sand art by chance, and he was instantly hooked by the creative medium. He decided to quit his job to devote himself to his new venture, which he calls “FallingInSand.” So far business is booming, and we can see why!
1. Showing off his work, like this piece of Queen Elizabeth II, has gained James more than 3.4 million fans on TikTok.
2. He makes 10 to 15 pieces each month. Some are of celebrities like Adele, others are commissioned works.
3. He can create a sand art portrait out of anything, from photographs to children’s drawings.
4. They’re a very cool way to preserve memories and mementos forever.
5. In addition to portraits, James also produces logos and sports team logos, like this one of the New York Yankees logo.
6. Or this one for fans of the San Francisco Giants.
7. He can make flags for every country.
8. And he often features special events, like this Tampa Bay Lightning player during the NHL play-offs.
9. Each of James’s works of art costs around $1,500, and he ships them all over the world.
10. His TikTok videos show the whole process of making the art, plus the finished product.
11. According to his website, James believes “art is the highest expression of human spirit.”
12. James loves being a part of his fans’ lives by creating customized gifts for them.
13. His specialties are vintage portraits for weddings, birthdays, engagements, pet memorials and more.
14. All of his sand art is ethically crafted from eco-friendly colored sand.
15. He finishes the pieces off with glue, so each masterpiece stays perfect forever.
We honestly never would have even thought to make art from sand, but James somehow makes it look easy! What a beautiful gift.
